Grantee Partner Site Visit @ Families First of Palm Beach County
Jan 17 @ 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Join us for a special site visit with JWF grantee partner Families First of Palm Beach County where we will meet with outreach workers from the TOPWA program, which aims to eliminate perinatal transmission of HIV. TOPWA is an innovative outreach program where specially trained staff members go out into the community and engage women who may be pregnant and at risk for HIV and substance abuse.

TOPWA outreach workers will lead us on a guided bus tour through Belle Glade and Pahokee, where many of these at risk women live, to provide insight into the lives of TOPWA clients and why the program is so successful.

Because this is a bus tour, space is limited. $25 includes lunch and transportation.

JWF is currently funding TOPWA $20,000 a year for 2 years.

Writing workshop
Jan 21 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Hello Screenwriters,

This is the meetup for all those beginners and other levels of interested writers to share their work with others.

Feel free to come bring the first 10 pages (or any 10 pages) of your screenplay/playwright/novel to the meeting or just bring yourself to observe and help read the material with us. We all take a part in the material and we read out loud. Later, we follow up with our feedback, suggestions, etc …

My favorite suggestion for new material that has not read yet … instead of bringing 10 pages … bring your Outline/BEAT SHEET! That way you can get suggestions on your overall story before diving into 10 pages at a time critiquing. This helps everyone to get an idea of your entire story and helps us give you better suggestions/advice to help write your story.

Please be sure to bring a few copies of your script, based on how many characters you need to read for you. At least 3 copies is recommended.

This is not only the opportunity to share your work and get feedback, but it is also a chance to ask any technical questions you might have about screenplay writing or other forms of writing as well.

I plan to keep this meeting strictly about the technical and the process of writing itself. This is not a networking meeting, although you are welcome to stay longer after the meeting to mingle. Depending on how many people show up, we may not have enough time to get everyone’s story in, but you will be granted first read at the next meetup if this happens. Sometimes people are willing to stay later, but most of the time, everyone wants to head out by 12/12:15pm the latest.

If you don’t have any particular story you are working on, I can create a few writing assignments for you all to work on such as a quick short story with a specific theme, etc … I can explain that more in person.

I look forward to seeing you there.

This event is free to members. Donations are welcome. Non-Members pay $5.

I look forward to seeing you there! Let’s Make A Scene!

Location: Trump Plaza 525 S. Flagler Dr. West Palm Beach, FL 33401 We will gather in the green space along the water front.

Parking: There are several parking garages available in the area. We recommend either the City Place parking garage located at Okeechobee and Quadrille, or the Banyan parking garage located at 200 Banyan Blvd. Both are approximately an 8 minute walk from the event. Please try to carpool if possible.

Alternate Transportation: Tri-Rail stops at the West Palm Beach station. From there it is about a 5 minute car ride to the event. We recommend using Uber or Lyft. Additionally, Palm Tran Route 1 goes directly past the location.

If you have mobility issues or trouble standing for long periods of time, you may consider bringing a folding chair.

A Request from the Organizers: This is one of many events we have had in this location, and we are so grateful to the WPB Police department for their presence during our rallies. It’s important to us that we maintain a positive relationship with the men and women of our law enforcement. As such, we ask you all to be kind and courteous to the officers, and compliant with their requests in so far as they do not infringe on our rights. They have asked that we not hang signs, flags, or other items over the road, nor should we at any time block the road way or the sidewalk. Absolutely no violent or destructive behavior will be tolerated.

RSVP: It is not necessary to RSVP for this event, but we ask that you do if possible. The event is absolutely free, and no ticket or other admission is necessary.

————————-

OFFICIAL STATEMENT, National Organizers (note from South Florida Activism: we changed the information below slightly and only to reflect our location locally)

On January 21, 2017 we will unite in West Palm Beach for the Women’s March on Washington. We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families — recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country.

The rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us–women, immigrants of all statuses, those with diverse religious faiths particularly Muslim, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native and Indigenous people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, the economically impoverished and survivors of sexual assault. We are confronted with the question of how to move forward in the face of national and international concern and fear.

In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.

We support the advocacy and resistance movements that reflect our multiple and intersecting identities. We call on all defenders of human rights to join us. This march is the first step towards unifying our communities, grounded in new relationships, to create change from the grassroots level up. We will not rest until women have parity and equity at all levels of leadership in society. We work peacefully while recognizing there is no true peace without justice and equity for all. HEAR OUR VOICE.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

This is an INCLUSIVE march, and EVERYONE who supports women’s rights are welcome.
